Different Types of Guitars
If you’re interested in learning how to play the guitar, then you should first decide on what type of instrument you want to dedicate your time to – some guitars are better left for experienced players, while others are relatively easy to pick up and play.
Here are the three most popular kinds of guitars available on the market:
1. Acoustic guitar. The acoustic is one of the staples of the industry, and it’s a very popular first guitar for beginning players. However, don’t let its popularity fool you – there are different types of acoustic guitars, and each one has a very unique sound. In general, the acoustic guitar is a very versatile instrument that can be used for many different roles within a song, including background melodies and solos.

2. Bass guitar. This is another very common guitar, and there are two types of bass: electric and acoustic. The main difference that sets the bass apart from other guitars is the thickness of the strings – both the electric and acoustic bass guitar has thicker strings than their classic acoustic counterpart. The bass guitar can be broken into further categories based on the amount of strings the instrument has – there are four, five and six string basses. Of these three, the four string bass is the easiest to learn on, while the six string is usually reserved for more experienced bassists.

3. Electric guitar. The electric guitar is structurally very different from the classic acoustic in that it doesn’t have a deep, hollow body to support a deep, resonating timbre. Instead, electric guitars are usually very thin, compact and sometimes quite flashy in design. They are commonly used in rock music; however, there are many different uses for an electric guitar. For instance, electric guitars are also a staple in the jazz industry, and they can also be incorporated sparingly into classic music, as well.

In addition to the above three, there are also steel guitars, archtop guitars, twelve-string guitars, double-neck guitars, resonator guitars, steel guitars and electro-acoustic guitars. However, the latter are not as widely known, and are not considered beginning instruments.
The type of guitar you choose will dictate the sound that you are able to produce. Additionally, some guitars will require extra equipment, like the electric guitar, which needs an amplifier to be played properly.
